Far from being a harmless activity, residential marijuana grow operations create significant safety and health hazards for the entire community, even after they’re dismantled.
Following a four-month consultation with stakeholders and the public, the Alberta government has accepted 37 recommendations that outline actions to address the health, safety and remediation challenges residential grow ops pose to current inhabitants, future homebuyers and the community as a whole.
The issues around grow operations are complex. Government can move quickly on a number of the recommendations, while others will take more preparation and work with stakeholders before they can be implemented.
With the acceptance of the Grow Op Free Alberta Final Recommendations Report, Alberta is leading the way among other provinces to create a more coordinated approach to deal with the issues related to residential grow operations.
